I find the premise for director Scott Derrickson’s upcoming horror movie The Black Phone, both fresh and interesting.
The story revolves around Finney, a young boy abducted by a masked killer and locked up in a cellar. To his surprise, a disconnected phone on the wall rings and when he answers, he finds the killer’s previous victims on the other end hellbent to save Finney. The man behind the attention-grabbing story is no other than the award-winning Joe Hill, who gave us Locke & Key and NOS4A2, among other riveting stories.
Ethan Hawke plays the masked killer. I like how he uses his voice to convey a calm impression with a touch of uncontrolled insanity lingering under the surface, as he showed so well in the TV-show Moon Knight recently. I hope he’ll bring a bit of that chilling intensity into the masked killer.
I think with Derrickson at the helm, who made one of my favourite horror movies, The Exorcism of Emily Rose, together with the writing of Joe Hill, we’ll be in for an enjoyable and eerie ride on June 24th. Check out the fierce trailer for The Black Phone below and see what you think.
