As certain as female rabbits have a tendency to develop abrasions, we’ll be washed over with vampire movies in the years to come.
The past decade has given us a whole bunch of sharp vampire movies like, Blade, Underworld, 30 Days of Night, Thirst, Daybreakers and the Twilight Saga, just to mention a few, from the top of my head.
The stream of vampire movies doesn’t seem to dry up anytime soon either, since both 2011 and 2012 offers a couple of exceedingly interesting vampire movies, apart from the mandatory Twilight movies, which I think are worth a closer look.
Fangland
First out, in 2011, is John Carpenter’s “Fangland”, which I wrote about some time ago, where Dracula is placed in our modern society. I have a strong feeling that the Master of Horror’s take on Dracula will be truly outstanding and mind ripping.
Vampire
Another interesting movie that is due in 2011 is Shunji Iwai’s “Vampire”, which isn’t exactly a vampire movie per se. It’s more like a Hannibal Lector turns Dracula type of movie. The macabre plot revolves around a college professor who has an uncanny thirst for blood. To satisfy his macabre urge, he takes advantage of young suicidal students, which he tricks to fall in love with him, before he ends their life by drinking their blood.
Priest
Scott Stewart’s “Priest” features Paul Bettany as a warrior priest that heads out to rescue his niece from a gang of vicious vampires, in this movie that is loosely based on a Korean comic. ´Note that this is Stewart’s second feature, after “Legion”, as a director. We should be able to enjoy “Priest” on May 13, 2011.
Dracula Year One
In 2012, we’ll see Sam Worthington (Avatar, Clash of The Titans) in “Dracula Year One”, which is set in the 14th century and depicts the events that turned Vlad of Transylvania into the fabled and bloodthirsty legend of Dracula.
Underworld 4
On January 20, 2012, we’ll finally get to see Kate Beckinsale reprise her role as Selene, as she steps up in the ring to rumble with the Lycans, once again in “Underworld 4”.
30 Days of Night: Dark Days
But you don’t need to wait until next year before you can feast your eyes on some fresh bloodstained vampire action. You can actually get your hands on “30 Days of Night: Dark Days”, which is waiting for you at your favorite movie dealer, right now.
Tarantino?!
Also, we shouldn’t forget the rumor that started in May about that Tarantino was planning on making a vampire movie as well. Even though it was most likely just a hyped up rumor and nothing else, the thought of Tarantino giving this vampire craze a shoot, is quite titillating.
I know that this flyspeck list, of upcoming vampire movies, is far from covering all the pointy vampire movies, which will hit us in the next couple of years, but I think it’s a good start though.
